Carmel Composer Mark Mancina to be featured at 2019 Carmel Bach Festival

Mark Mancina
Multiple award-winning Carmel composer Mark Mancina created a Suite in Three Movements for solo guitar and orchestra based on his film scores and additional new music. The Suite will be presented as part of the Friday main concerts, “Guitar Hero,” July 19 and 26, at the Sunset Center. Guitarist Jason Vieaux is the soloist for the Suite and Rodrigo’s iconic Concierto de Aranjuez, also on the program.
The slow movement from the Suite, Diva (from the soundtrack to the Anime series Blood+), begins with a haunting English horn solo over beautiful harmonies. Another movement is dramatic fast music from the film Twister, with driving rhythms, a joyous theme and technically-demanding guitar phrases. The suite’s opening movement is new and begins lyrically before developing into a rhythmic Spanish style energetic allegro. This suite pairs beautifully with the Rodrigo.

Born in Santa Monica, Mancina began his musical training at an early age on classical guitar, piano and composition. His scores frequently feature his own performances on piano, guitar, bass, percussion and drums, highlighting unique sounds harvested from a personal collection of traditional, exotic, and custom instruments.

Mancina has created a body of work ranging from the Hollywood box office to the Broadway stage. He has been awarded three Grammy Awards, Britain’s Ivor Novello Award and two American Music Awards. He received a Tony nomination as co-composer/lyricist and music producer of “The Lion King On Broadway.” He has scored dozens of films including Speed, Twister, Bad Boys, Tarzan, August Rush, Training Day and Moana.
