Organ Concert Series Concludes Oct. 24 with Britain’s Svyati Duo

Organ and Cello Magic at St. Dunstan’s Church in Carmel Valley

Music at St. Dunstan’s 2018 organ concert organizers anticipate an elegant finish to this year’s series with the performance of the Svyati Duo from England— a magical and powerful pairing of Julian Collings at the church’s Dobson Tracker organ and Rebecca Hepplewhite on cello.  Their performance at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal church will be part of a U.S. tour.

“An Organ and Cello Tryst” will be performed Wednesday, October 24, at 7 pm at St. Dunstan’s.  A wine and cheese reception with the artists precedes the concert at 6 pm.  Collings and Hepplewhite have been lauded for their mastery of their instruments and the beauty of their collaboration. “The duo has quickly risen to prominence in the UK and beyond through its innovative programming and exceptional musical standards. Both performers are artists of the highest order,” writes The American Organist.

“Rebecca Hepplewhite combines unbridled passion with brilliant virtuosity, richness of tone and color, rhythmic control, superb intonation and musical sensitivity. Julian Collings combines technical aplomb with collaborative sensitivity and stylistic understanding. This is an excellent representation of an instrumental pairing that deserves to be heard more often.”  A sampling of their artistry is here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrKcvXr3XTA

Svyati Duo take their name from Collings and Hepplewhite’s first collaboration, as conductor and cellist in a performance of Sir John Tavener’s masterpiece “Svyati” for solo cello and choir. Tavener subsequently became the duo’s Patron the following year and remained so until his death in 2013.  The pair maintains a diverse and exciting repertoire, from Baroque sonatas through to substantial romantic and contemporary works, and are committed to performing music that displays the diversity of their instrumental combination. A tireless search for repertoire continues to reward them with unjustly neglected, original works in addition to commissioning new music and transcribing existing pieces. The Svyati Duo has performed in venues of all sizes, from churches and town halls to major cathedrals and concert halls in Europe, Asia, and the United States.

Tickets are $35; students and under 18 free.  St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church is located at 28005 Robinson Canyon Road in Carmel Valley.
