Daphne Honma, Kevin Chen, Hyun Jee Kim, Gianna Zufall, Rory McClish, Madeline Anderson & Jordan Adams
On Saturday afternoon, November 14, we had an opportunity to hear the seven young pianists from three counties in California who placed in the 2009 Paderewski Youth Competition performing in the Grand Ballroom of the Paso Robles Inn. There was so much raw talent among these five young pianists that you could see how difficult it was for the three jurors to select the top winners. In the order of performance we heard the following seven winners:
Rory McClish, 13, from Morrow Bay, a pupil of Dr. Korishelli, performed Mozart’s Rondo in D Major, K.485. He was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Junior Division.
Madeline Anderson, 13, from Monterey, a pupil of Lyn Bronson, performed Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G Minor, Op. 23, No. 5. She was also awarded an Honorable Mention in the Junior Division.
Gianna Zufall, 12, from Arroyo Grande, a pupil of Alan Boehmer, performed Mozart’s Fantasy in D Minor, K. 396 and Chopin’s “Minute” Waltz. She won Third Place in the Junior Division.
Jordan Adams, 14, from Salinas, a pupil of Lyn Bronson, performed Beethoven’s Bagatelle in G Minor and Orage (Storm) by Liszt. He won Second Place in the Junior Division.
Hyun Jee Kim, 13, from Monterey, a pupil of Ha Yung Rhee, performed the first movement of Beethoven’s “Waldstein” Sonata and Chopin’s Etude in C-sharp minor, Op. 10, No. 4. She was First Place winner in the Junior Division.
Kevin Chen, 17, from Marina, a pupil of Lyn Bronson, performed Paderewski’s Nocturne in B-flat major, Op. 16, No. 4 and Chopin”s Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante, Op. 22. He was Second Place winner in the Senior Division.
Daphne Honma, 16, from Santa Barbara, a pupil of Dr. Korishelli, performed Bach’s Prelude & Fugue in G Major from WTC Bk. I, Paderewski’s Menuet in G major, and Chopin’s Scherzo in C-sharp minor, Op. 39. She was first place winner in the Senior Division.
Distinguished guests from the Polish Consulate General in Los Angeles added luster to the occasion. After the concert, Artistic Director Marek Zebrowski invited members of the audience to see the video of last year’s three winners’ visit to Poland which was being shown in the Paderewski Room of the Paso Robles Inn.
Special mention should be made about the beautiful Steinway concert grand supplied by Sherman Clay in San Jose. This lovely instrument enhanced the playing of each of the winners.
